Trauma Therapy Sessions
We now have a deeper understanding of the way in which painful past experiences, especially those that took place in childhood, impact our capacity to lead fulfilling lives, to experience joy and to relate in a healthy way. Yet for many of us, it is less clear how we begin to unravel the way in which these experiences have shaped our relationship to ourselves, our world and those around us.
I am passionate about guiding my clients towards this gentle unraveling and to providing an expert space for them to begin to feel into these layers and to integrate the impact of these painful past experiences on their capacity for connection to self and others. My trauma therapy sessions are based on Dr. Laurence Heller’s NeuroAffective Relational Model (NARM®), which is a profoundly effective and cutting-edge approach to healing and integrating childhood and relational trauma.
Understanding NARM® NARM® recognizes that early disruptions in our basic human needs - for connection, attunement, trust, autonomy, and love - create adaptive survival patterns that, while protective in childhood, can limit our adult capacity for joy, intimacy, and authentic self-expression. Rather than focusing primarily on what happened to us, NARM® works with how these early experiences organized our nervous system and shaped our core beliefs about ourselves and relationships.
This approach works with the unconscious patterns and behaviors we developed to cope with painful disruptions in secure bonding and attachment with those we depended on for survival. These early adaptive strategies deeply affect our identity, emotions, physiology, and interpersonal relationships - often in ways we're not consciously aware of.
My Approach: In my sessions, I draw on both my clinical training as a NARM® Master Practitioner and the insights gained through my own personal healing journey. I have a particular interest in how our early experiences impact our capacity to relate intimately both to ourselves and others. I am also committed to understanding and working with the profound impact that collective traumas such as racial and cultural trauma have on our beings and our psyches.
During sessions, I work with what is alive in you in the here and now. Rather than focusing primarily on past events or narratives, the emphasis is on deeply attuning to where you are in the present moment as a doorway into deeper layers of healing. Through gentle tracking, observing, and attuning, we can explore these layers at a pace that feels safe and sustainable for you.
My clients report feeling safe, held, and empowered as they embark on a journey towards uncovering and connecting more authentically to themselves and others.
“Maya is helping me to work though a traumatic experience that happened to me 24 years ago, when I was 22. She is helping me revisit, heal and accept the trauma without feeling ashamed of it. I am now starting to be able to accept the trauma as part of who I am today rather than something I need to rid myself of in order to heal.”
